Kyushu’s History & Natural Wonders

Journey across the beautiful island of Kyushu, and explore its rugged landscapes, cultural attractions, shopping sites and more.

About Your Trip

Uncover the mystique of Kyushu on this unforgettable DreamTrip across Japan’s largest island. Begin with a welcome reception and dinner to meet your fellow DreamTrippers. Next, you’re off on an adventure to Miyazaki, Kirishima and more. Brave the Sakurajima volcano and learn about its eruptions at the insightful Arimura Lava Observatory. You’ll even have an opportunity to create your own exquisite Satsuma Kiriko souvenir with cut glass. Unwind peacefully in a Ibusuki sand bath and later with a soak in a hot spring. Indulge in delicious traditional cuisine along the way, with scheduled lunches and dinners at local restaurants. Don’t forget to honor past and present gods throughout your visit — Kirishima Jingu and Udo shrines are important stops along your voyage.

What we love:
• Volcanic sand in Ibusuki is believed to help improve circulation and rejuvenate skin, along with other health benefits.
• The Udo Shrine is set in the cave on the side of a cliff, facing the sea. The enshrined deity is Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, the father of Emperor Jimmu, also known as the 1st Emperor of Japan.
• Famous Satsuma Kiriko glass features delicate, overlaid colored glass, varying in gradient and depth of color.

Destination

Kyushu, Japan, is a subtropical island known for active volcanoes, including Sakurajima, one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in the area. The island is also home to the world’s largest active caldera, Aso Caldera, as well as lush flora and plentiful hot springs.

The island offers something for every taste. Its most populous city, Fukuoka, highlights historic sites and modern attractions, with many museums and art galleries that tell the robust story of Kyushu. The seaside city of Kagoshima, meanwhile, is renowned for pottery, Satsuma Kiriko cut glass and delicate Oshima Tsumugi fabric. Miyazaki is Kyushu’s primary shopping destination and a substantial contributor to the island’s travel industry — attractions include the SeaGaia event center and the Miyazaki-city Phoenix Zoo. Visitors can also get their adrenaline pumping while surfing some of Japan’s best waves or stretching their legs on a scenic hike.
